Introduction: In the 1970s and 1980s we noticed the occurrence of bed bugs (Cimex lectularius Linné, 1758) in flats, family houses and accommodation facilities in Slovakia and only sporadically in the Czech Republic. Under regular monitoring of this ectoparasite by hygienists from a department of disinfection, disinsection, and deratization, it was possible not only to eliminate the occurrence of the parasite but in the 1980s even to eradicate it. Today, it is necessary again to address this major global health issue. Cimex lectularius has once again returned to human habitats. Its biological development and activity are bond to...

Iveta Danilová, Irena Lovětinská-Šlamborová

Hygiena 2017, 62(3):85-89 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1520

Most bacteria exist as a cell community that adheres to living or inert surfaces. This fellowship is called a biofilm and it is often associated with health complications. Bacterial biofilm infections are especially problematic because the sessile bacteria resist the host's immune mechanisms, antibiotics and disinfectants. The review deals with the principle of biofilm formation and with aspects that affect this process. It tries to bring readers new trends in modern wound dressing, in the treatment of healthcare premises, water and invasive medical devices, which should lead to a minimization of biofilm formation and the incidence of health- care...

Qualified assessment of potential health risks in the living and working environment, related to existing buildings and planned industrial, transport or other building activities/projects is an essential part of their audit. While the initial phase of the risk assessment, namely its identification and exposure assessment, are of a purely naturalistic nature, the self-estimation of the risk level already includes increasingly arbitrary aspects (eg safety factors). Risk communication and, in particular, risk management mean that, in psychosocial terms, decision-making is then put into a political context. An indispensable component of that system of...
