Impact Assessment of PM10 Concentrations on Mortality and Morbidity in Ostrava during Smog Episodes

The current level of PM10 pollution is associated with an increase in mortality and morbidity. The city Ostrava is one of the areas with deteriorated air quality and with occurrence of smog situations during winter months. The method of calculation of attributive proportions recommended by the WHO was used for evaluating the theoretical impact of the 2010 smog episode on mortality and morbidity. Attributive proportions express the proportion of cases due to the increase of short-term PM10 concentrations. The 2010 smog situation was compared with the smog episode in 2009. Effects of Low Frequency Noise from Open Air Music Festivals on Unconcerned People in the Surrounding Areas

Low frequency noise in the frequency range below 200 Hz has a very low attenuation through the open air, walls, windows and other barriers. It propagates over very large distances and can cause standing waves and resonances in dwellings. Therefore, the acoustic fields can be non homogenous in the embosomed areas. Nutrition Screening Tools for Hospitalized Patients

Malnutrition in hospitalized patients is rarely a timely diagnosis. Studies indicate 30-60% of patients were malnourished in accordance with hospital admission. By the early detection of nutritional disorders in patients. Deterioration may be avoided in functional performance, serious health complications, increased morbidity and mortality and quality of life deterioration. A combination of several examination methods is usually implemented in practice. The aim of this paper is to make known the basic standardized tests for assessment of nutrition in health facilities.

Smoking and Skin Aging

Smoking contributes to the initiation and progression of many diseases, including the damages of the skin. A variety of epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies described the enhanced risk of different skin diseases among smokers, namely premature skin aging, poor wound healing, acne, psoriasis, eczema, hair lost, palmoplantar pustulosis, systemic lupus erythematodes. Two Recollections from the History of the Public Health Service

The author brings forth recollections on the activities of the Public Health Service in years past. Mentioned is the effort in the protection of health and the environment in the vicinity of a rock and soil dump for the uncovering of a large opencast coalmine, and the initial days of poliomyelitis vaccination with the Salk vaccine and then with the Sabin vaccine.
