The objective of the communication is to provoke a discussion on the ways how to increase awareness of one's own responsibility towards health. It is generally known that so-called civilization-linked diseases are in first place among the causes of mortality. The Czech Republic is among the countries with high child mortality due to accidents. Although that mortality has been falling recently, the overall number of accidents has not. Up to now, preventive activities were not being coordinated and systemically resolved. Therefore, at the Ministry of Health there has been established a working group for child accident prevention and developed a National Action plan of Child Accident Prevention for the years 2007-2017. Prevention of Accidents and Providing First Aid not Only in Emergency or Extraordinary Situation

During the year 2006 approximately 1,201 pupils and students of primary and secondery schools were instructed in providing first aid which comprised a total of 173 lessons. A short knowledge test was given to the 8th and 9th levels pupils after finishing the lessons. Conclusion from the test is, the target was completed. One of the significant results is that a 9th grade pupil (participant in this project) saved the life of a drowning young man thanks to his qualified approach.

The new educational primary preventive school-based programme "Non-Smoking is a Norm" has been prepared for the 1st to 3rd grades of primary school to complete the continuing series of anti-smoking primary prevention in the Czech Republic. The website "Does violence concern me?" is focused on children aged 11-15 years and prevention of violence as one of the existing forms of social-pathological behaviour. The basic element of the website is the interactive tool, which allows individual assessment of knowledge and risks resulting from children's socio-pathological behaviour. Within the verifying phase of website poor children's knowledge concerning risk situations and risk behaviour were revealed.The website is a contribution to a nationwide need to increase preventive activity in child violence prevention with the use of modern methods, attitudes and intervention.

Ageing Policy in the Czech Republic

Presented is a review of the state and development of demographic changes that are leading to the ageing of the population in the Czech Republic. Analyzed are factors that may be important for the improvement of the quality of life of the elderly (economic activities, education, etc.) and presented are measures taken by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs for resolving those problems. In this connection pointed out are Act No.108/2006 Dig. on social services, the national program of preparation for ageing for the period of 2008 through 2012 "Quality of Life in Old Age", Strategy of Lifelong Education, and other documents.

Within its budget, the Ministry of Health supports NGOs that are involved in caring for the elderly and citizens affected with diseases connected with advanced age. Presented is a review of subsidies granted in the past four years along with the topics covered in the programme. Results show that among non-profit organizations there is an increasing interest in the programme dealing with problems of old age.

Presented is a review of four projects within the 6th EU Framework Programme that includes activities for increasing the quality and safety of nutrition. In question are projects for limiting the accumulation of noxae in foodstuffs (ICARE), financing the development of the food industry (ENFFI), increasing the nutritional value of traditional foods through innovations (TRUEFOOD) and the utilization of barley to obtain high-fiber and low-salt bakery products (BARLEYBREAD). The Federation of the Food and Drink Industries (FFDI) is transferring those activities to the Czech Republic and is coordinating them.
Quit and Win 2006

Smoking of tobacco products and addiction to nicotine is a global health problem. The Quit and Win Campaign is trying to help to solve this tobacco pandemic. In the Czech Republic the contest has been run periodically and because of its effectiveness it has been added to recommended procedures of the National Health Programme of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic. The contest is aimed at adult smokers, who have to prove that they will quit smoking for one month. Wandering towards Healthy Eating

In 2005-2006 the Regional Institute of Public Health in Hradec Králové realised the health promotion project called "Wandering towards healthy eating". It is an education programme for pupils, aged 9 to 12, with four stations. Aim of the project is to improve their knowledge about healthy nutrition and influence their attitudes towards the consummation of healthy food. The competition was realised at 10 primary schools in the region Královéhradecko; 585 children took part. Within the project three educational materials were created. In 2007 other organisations from the Czech Republic were trained how to manage this activity.

The project was aimed at improving health education amongst pregnant women to improve their own health and that of their offsprings. Fiber in Nutrition of Children

The authors evaluated fiber intake in 350 children and adolescents that were followed-up for a chronic disease (asthma, cancer, obesity) and in 1,000 healthy children from nursery schools, primary schools, high schools and colleges. The authors found that fiber intake is adequate only in healthy children from nursery schools but was decreased in all other groups.
