About the journal

Hygiena is a journal of public health protection and promotion that provides insights into important issues in this area. The journal features articles presenting information on population health, analysing health determinants and trends, elucidating the substance and impacts of the relationships between environmental factors and human health, dealing with health risk assessment, or summarizing experience gained in the implementation of health protection measures. Other areas covered are health promotion and disease prevention, their medical bases, methodological approaches, and results obtained in studies and projects.

The journal presents important advances made in these areas in other countries and reviews of selected new books and online sources. In addition, the journal reports latest news from the life of the Society of Hygiene and Community Medicine (SHCM) as a branch of the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkyně (CzMA), and also from the Slovak Society of Hygiene of the Slovak Medical Association. There are also legislative updates and information of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic and Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic relevant to the activities of the Public Health Service. Professional events at the national level are presented to the readers in the form of journal supplements.

The first issue of the journal appeared in 1956 under the title Československá hygiena and became an integral part of the medical literature of both countries, a promoter of progressive directions for the development of public health and high level research and practical activities in public health specialties. Since 2004, any contribution to the journal is peer-reviewed by independent experts.

As a peer-reviewed journal, Hygiena is recognized as adequate for publishing papers resulting from projects funded by Czech grant agencies in the relevant areas. Any new article is registered and assigned a digital object identifier (DOI) code by the international association Crossref. The DOI system makes it possible for both the authors and readers to use a cross-publisher citation linking and to access articles in other journals including full text in the Internet environment.
