Background: In Slovakia, prevalence of hypertension and its determinants in the population of adolescents have not been systematically monitored. In this study we present the results of observing the impacts of selected risk factors of lifestyle (overweight, obesity, physical inactivity, excessive time spent over sedentary activities, salting, consumption of food with high salt content, smoking) on blood pressure in high school youth. Our goal has been to define the determinants of prehypertension and hypertension in students of Bratislava district, high schools in.Population and methods: The targeted group was composed of 4,242 healthy adolescents...
Correction for Sound Wave Reflection from House Facades with Protected Outdoor Environs of Buildings
Jan Šlechta, Tomáš Hellmuth
Hygiena 2016, 61(4):146-151
The paper presents research performed in order to classify the correction for sound wave reflection from house facades with protected outdoor environs of buildings. Quantification of this correction is necessary because of the Directive 2002/49/EC which demands to subtract the reflected component of the sound pressure level from the measured sound pressure level A. The norm ČSN ISO 1996-2 deals with the problem and classifies three situations which can occur during measurements. An important document in the Czech environment is the Methodical Manual for the Assessment of Noise in the Protected Outdoor Environs of Buildings which assigns to all situations...

Vítězslav Křivánek, Josef Stryk, Jiří Jedlička
Hygiena 2016, 61(4):152-156
The issue of noise is among the key issues of long-term road transport in terms of its negative impacts on the environment and human health, which is considerably affected by technical the condition of the road - road wearing course. Noise generated by contact of the tyre with the and road surface occurs in vehicles from the speed of approx. 40 km/h and higher, therefore low-noise road pavements have recently been used as anti-noise measures. Although there were just several cases of specialized surface installation in the Czech Republic in 2010, in 2013 there were already dozens of cases. Faster acoustic degradation has been found with low-noise surfaces,...

Jana Fialová, Jana Stávková, Drahoslava Hrubá
Hygiena 2016, 61(4):157-160
The opinions and attitudes of medical students involved in the project Smoke-free homes shows the importance of a comprehensive approach to smoking prevention. Student participation in the project indicates a new perspective on the possibilities of prevention. Future doctors can better understand the attitudes of smokers and non-smokers and they can apply that experience in their approach to smoking prevention.

Hygiena 2016, 61(4):161-166
Serological surveys monitor levels of antibodies against selected infections and provide information about the susceptibility and collective immunity of the population. The surveys are used for evaluating the overall effectiveness vaccination programs of and create a major basis for important decisions about interventions, and modifications and changes in immunization schedules. They are also a basis for pronouncing epidemiological predictions and creating hypotheses. The introduction of serological surveys in the Czech Republic and also worldwide was contributed by the Czech founder of modern epidemiology professor Karel Raška, MD. In the Czech Republic,...

Vladimír Bencko, Petr Šíma, Bohumil Turek
Hygiena 2016, 61(4):167-171
Beta-glucans are structural components of the cell walls of bacteria, cyanobacteria, algae, yeasts and fungi, and even in abundance are also found in cereal grains. The primary source of beta glucans for immunomodulatory studies and for therapeutic applications are more or less traditional, given partly by their greater availability. In Europe and the US are zymosan of yeast used in baking and brewing, France glucans from seaweed, in Canada and Brazil glucans from cereals, Japan, China and Russia are all kinds of mushrooms (shiitake, maitake, reishi). Several clinical studies have indicated the possibility of using beta glucans in the preventin of...
