Increasing numbers of school-age children are becoming overweight or obese. Obesity is a consequence of energy imbalance. Many children fail to meet dietary recommendation. Metabolic syndrome is a condition characterized by high cardiovascular risk with the potential of promoting the development of type 2 diabetes as well. Project NEMESYS has shown prevalence of metabolic syndrome in 25.6% of ambulatory patients. Recommended diagnostics and treatments in obesitology are based on European Clinical Practice Guidelines. The success of an obesity treatment depends in particular on a change of lifestyle, a decrease in energetic input by a reduction diet and an increase in the energetic output by a properly selected physical activity with the respect to patient's health, age and the possibility of the patient to cope with stress. The right motivation of the patient is essential for the success of a long-term treatment. If there are no contraindications, it is advisable to support the treatment by anti-obesity medicaments. Very strong scientific evidence based on a wide range of well-conducted studies shows that physically active people have higher levels of health-related fitness, a lower risk profile for developing a number of disabling medical conditions and lower rates of various chronic diseases than do people who are inactive.
