Drahoslava Hrubá, Lubomír Kukla, Mojmír Tyrlík, Halina Matějová

Hygiena 2009, 54(4):112-116

The "Hygiene hypothesis" proposes an explanation for the rising prevalence of allergic diseases through improved care early in life. Reduced exposure to infectious agents can deprive the immune system of maturation and support the survival of the fetal-type Th1/Th2 ratio. In the ELSPAC study, children aged 3 years were divided into 3 groups according to absence/presence of allergic diseases (atopy, urtica, hay fever, asthma, others): non-allergic (NA), monoallergic (A1), polyallergic (A2+). Possible risk factors were evaluated: living in a large family, breast feeding, exposure to smoking, postnatal morbidity, vaccination,...

Tereza Kopřivová Herotová, Jiří Beneš

Hygiena 2009, 54(4):127-129

Antimicrobial resistance remains one of the key problems in community and hospital settings within Europe. Increasing antibiotic resistance is related to increasing antibiotic use. The choice of prescribed antibiotics is often influenced by various marketing mechanisms and patient's comfort rather than by medical criteria. Representatives of many European countries feel weight of the problem and support public educational compaigns to attain prudent antibiotic use for both medical professionals and the public. Nevertheless, no great public educational campaign has been introduced so far. E-Bug seems to be the first such activity of this scope.

Vladimír Bencko, František Kožíšek

Hygiena 2009, 54(4):130-135

The introduction of sand filtration and bank infiltration in drinking water treatment in the middle of the 19th century represented significant progress in efforts to attain safe drinking water. An acceptable measure of safety was attained only on the introduction of its disinfection. After a century since the introduction of continuous chlorination of drinking water along with the previously established filtration, it has been estimated that drinking water produced in this way can be attributed with...
