Between the years 1995 and 2005 the Regional Public Health Authority in Liberec conducted regular surveys focused on the teenager's lifestyle. The target group consisted of pupils of the 8th class of primary schools, students of secondary schools and apprentices of training centers. From the wide range of life style factors the following had been chosen: smoking, drugs abuse and alcoholism. There has been demonstrated a statistically significant increase of risky behavior regarding the factors observed. The survey was an important supplementation of the standard epidemiology given by public health legislation. At the same time these surveys helped...

Vladimír Valenta

Hygiena 2009, 54(3):80-83

The article evaluates our four-year experience with conducting compulsory self-selected courses for students of the medical faculty focused on public health and epidemiological topics. The aim of these courses was to provide students with practice in this medical field, thereby making it more attractive and creating foundations for future professional orientation and better mutual coopearation between public health authorities and health care facilities. The courses proved a success and underlined the necessity of this form of education. Conclusions and recommendations for standardization of this type of education have been accepted on the basis of...

Smoking and Bacterial Infections

Drahoslava Hrubá

Hygiena 2009, 54(3):84-87

The brief overwiev of actual knowledge about enhanced risks of both active and passive smokers' susceptibilities to diseases caused by infectious factors, such as: respiratory tract infections (including tuberculosis), their comorbidity (as otitis media), bacterial diseases in the oral cavity (including periodontitis), sexually transmitted diseases and nosocomial infections. There are acceptable explanations for the biologic plausibility of these associations, supported by experimental studies. The findings are another reason for a comprehensive approach towards controlling the tobacco epidemic.

We conducted a pilot study - structured interviews with 55 students of a specialised sports grammar school were carried out to assess the athletes' personal experience and attitudes. Results: Only such sports supplements are recommended to young athletes which help to sustain the energy, vitamin and minerals requirements or help to optimize hydratation. On the contrary, supplements containing very high amounts of physiologically effective...

Jaromíra Kůsová

Hygiena 2009, 54(3):99-103

Cytogenetic methods including cytogenetic analysis of chromosomal aberrations of peripheral lymphocytes have been using in monitoring of largely occupational exposure to genotoxic factors in Czech Republic and other countries for many years. In view of the fact that problems of genetic toxicology are quite remote for the health protection experts, the article submits some scientific knowledge from the discipline of genetic toxicology and selected experience and outputs in context with using of the "conventional cytogenetic analysis of chromosomal aberrations in human lymphocytes" in connection with the health safety of people, working at Moravskoslezsky...
