Andrea Batáriová, Milena Černá, Jiří Šmíd, Věra Spěváčková, Mája Čejchanová, Dana Očadlíková, Hana Bavorová, Bohuslav Beneš

Hygiena 2007, 52(3):68-69

In 2005 the concentrations of trace elements (cadmium, lead, mercury, copper, selenium, zinc) in blood and urine of adults were measured in the framework of the Biological Monitoring Project in the Czech Republic. Blood cadmium levels in adults were significantly influenced by smoking (medians 1.30 and 0.50 μg/l in smokers and non-smokers, respectively). The levels of cadmium in urine were higher in women than in men. Higher blood lead levels were observed in men (35,4 μg/l) in comparison to women (26,6 μg/l), plumbemia correlated with age. Blood mercury levels were 0.91 and 1.16 μg/l in men and women, respectively. Blood selenium levels...

Health Impact of Traffic Emissions

Vladimír Bencko, Milan Tuček, Jitka Petanová, Ladislav Novotný

Hygiena 2007, 52(3):70-72

Alterations of immunity due to exposure to traffic emissions may result in an increased risk of cancer. Methods: Repeated observation of a total of 221 persons (84% men) for a period of three years consists of 44 persons occupationally exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 117 healthy controls. The measurement of the content of 16 PAHs employing active personal dosimetry in the working air was performed by personal long-term sampling was done in 25 exposed persons. The exposure biomarker analyzed was the urine content of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP). Results: The monitored sums of PAHs in the working air ranged from 0.11 to 8.96 μg.m-3...

Health Education in Framework Education Programmes

Dana Fialová, Jana Doležalová

Hygiena 2007, 52(3):73-74

In the National Programme of Education Development the principles of curriculum reform were formulated. Framework education programmes (FEP) define binding education frameworks for particular periods of pre-school, elementary and college education. School education programmes are drawn up by each particular school according to principles given in appropriate FEP. These the school may modify according to its own conditions, character of the region and its specific aims. In FEP for elementary and college education, there are given so-called elementary education areas and cross-sectional themes. In the education area "Man and Health", common for both...

On Fish Consumption

Tatiana Kimáková, Kamila Bernasovská

Hygiena 2007, 52(3):77-79

We measured the concentration of mercury obtained by analysis from frozen and canned seafood and other fish pruducts. 350 samples were analyzed and the results evaluated according to existing domestic norms (Codes of the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic N° 608/2004-100 from March 2004 - dealing with contaminants of food pruducts in Slovakia). The mercury analysis was performed by established methods using flame atomic absorption spectrometry AMA 254. The concentration of mercury obtained from the 350 samples was in the range of 0.08942 mg.kg-1 to 3.98692 mg.kg-1 Hg.From the 350 analyzed samples in 160 (46 %)...

Věra Kubrychtová, Thomas P. Olson, Kent R. Bailey, Prabin Thapa, Thomas G. Allison, Bruce D. Johnson

Hygiena 2007, 52(3):79-81

The goal of this study was to evaluate heart rate recovery (HRR) as a useful variable in assessing risk of death in heart failure (HF) patients and compare it with other prognostic indicators. Methods: Retrospective data were analyzed in 712 HF patients who underwent echocardiography and exercise testing. Results: Patients were divided into 3 groups according to their HRR: group 1 (HRR ≤ 4 bpm), group 2 (5 ≤ HRR ≤ 9 bpm), and group 3 (HRR ≥ 10). Group 1 had the highest mortality in both, the long and short term. HRR was independently predictive of mortality after adjusting for age, gender, NYHA class, LVEF and BMI. Conclusions: HRR might...

Methods of Assessing Health-related Quality of Life after Menopause

Markéta Moravcová, Jiří Mareš, Josef Donát

Hygiena 2007, 52(3):82-83

Presently, no standardized method as a specific instrument for assessing health-related quality of life after menopause is being applied in Czech clinical practice. In this study three methods are examined to that end - the Utian Quality of Life Scale (UQOL), the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) and the SF-36 health survey questionnaire. UQOL and MRS are being standardized for the Czech female population. Standardization of the Czech version of questionnaires is carried out in practice following "contemplations out loud", reflections of clients and methods of filling them out. The SF-36 is being used as a general method of assessing HRQoL for the rating...

Environmental and Life Style Risk Factors of Colorectal Carcinoma. Questionnaire Inquiry

Jiří Rameš, Vladimír Bencko, Zdeněk Valenta

Hygiena 2007, 52(3):87-88

A data base containing 1,000 questionnaires was collected, which included data from patients suffering from lung, colorectal and breast cancer. Data collection was performed by a method of focused interview, which was performed by trained health workers. This study recognized all ethical requirements, including informed consent. In this sample, a diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma was found in men (N=117) and women (N=67) in comparison with the control, non-oncological group, which included men (N=36) and women (N=67). Aside from the expected risk factors as, e.g. age, or genetic predisposition, additional statistically significant associations were...
