Traffic Education and its Efficacy in Elementary School Pupils - Intervention Study in 10 Districts of the Central Bohemia Region

Child accidents are among the major causes of child mortality and morbidity, namely in all industrialized countries. At present, a serious problem is the increasing number of traffic accidents which in the child population are by far the most frequent cause of post-accident mortality. Although traffic education is not presently accepted by the professional public unequivocally as an important factor significantly participating in the lowering of traffic accident incidence, discussed in the present communication is its influence on the knowledgeability profile and command of safety in road traffic in elementary school pupils, as well as in the lowering of the overall number of traffic accidents. The results in this communication broaden those obtained in the framework of materializing the project PPZ 9599/2006, wherein there had been studied the effect of educative intervention within an interval of two months. The results of both studies offer unequivocal proof of a marked positive effect of educative intervention in the improvement of traffic knowledgeability in elementary school pupils, and of six-month education even in the lowering of the frequency of traffic accidents.
