Impact of Socioeconomic Factors on Health in Epidemiological Studies

The relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and health is a frequent subject of epidemiological studies in various populations. Adjustment for SES factors has become a routine component of epidemiological analyses. Health is affected by SES factors both its material and also psycho-social aspects. SES factors are strong predictors of health indicators on both individual and regional levels. General outcomes of epidemiological studies have confirmed that SES differences caused the differences in morbidity, early mortality and demand for health services. These differences are not only the direct consequence of economical factors, but also reflect inequalities by age, sex, social position and geographical area. The aim of the paper is a short review of the most important socio-economic factors, their general impact on health status and on selected health indicators.
